When you have said a million times, "someone should write a book about our family," someone does. My cousin, Albert Marra's book, "Southampton Summers," has just been released. If you thought Southampton was only for the rich and famous, think again. There were huge Italian families summering in small American bungalows, way off the beaten path in Southampton.
Albert beautifully captures our childhood summers, Italian-style: cold eggplant parm sandwiches on the beach? Nothing tastier! Eat a clam right out of the water? Nothing sweeter! The book brought back many memories and warmed my soul. Not to mention the cute pictures of me as a child.

Enjoyable, fun book to read! The stories of these Italian-American families at their summer vacation homes, reminded me of similar childhood memories that I have.

Wonderful Summer Stories
Southampton Summers was an enjoyable book to read. It was interesting to have multiple authors share their summer stories and perspectives of their time vacationing in Southampton, NY. Many were funny and very relatable; especially if your're from a large Italian-American family or a New Yorker as well.

Fun in the sun - how 3 Italian families made it happen for four generations

Format: Hardcover - Verified Purchase
This book is a memoir of the experiences of several generations of 3 Italian families with their relatives and friends, as they vacationed together for decades in the same 3 adjacent small bungalows in Southampton on New York's Long Island. It is as much about Italian family culture as it is about the people. Sixteen family members contribute their feelings and experiences about their very special vacation place. Albert Marra has done an extraordinary job in providing the background of the family's journey from immigrants, many of whom worked in the garment industry in New York City as tailors and seamstresses, to proud vacation property owners close to the Atlantic Ocean and Peconic Bay. The recounting of his own experiences as a child there from the 1950s to the present time gives the reader perspective and insight into Italian family life - a life shared by even the current 4th & 5th generations who use these same modest properties to this day.

Loved it. Enjoyed reading about the Italian families and how they worked to have something to give their children. Southampton is a beautiful place and the book takes me back in time of how my Grandparents came from Italy and how we all moved to Brewster because of my Grandparents buying property in the country...

Great read. Especially poignant for Baby Boomers who remember the lifestyles of first and second generation European immigrants and how they assimilated yet kept so many of their customs (primarily around food). The pull of a special summer place to escape the city made me nostalgic and eager to grab the family and book a bungalow!
